What Is Nuru Massage? An Honest First-Timer’s Guide

Nuru massage explained without the mystery: the Japanese gel, what the session feels like, hygiene, prices in London and how to prepare for your first time.

Of everything on our menu, nuru massage generates the most questions — and the most devoted regulars. Here is everything a first-timer actually needs to know.

The short version

Nuru is a Japanese full-body massage performed skin-to-skin on a layer of extraordinarily slippery gel made from nori seaweed. The word nuru literally means “slippery” in Japanese. Your masseuse does not just massage you with her hands — she glides the entire length of her body along yours.

If body to body massage is a conversation, nuru is a whisper directly into your nervous system.

The gel is the magic

Authentic nuru gel is:

  • Seaweed-based — derived from nori, the same seaweed used in Japanese cuisine
  • Colourless and odourless — nothing perfumed or sticky
  • Hypoallergenic and water-based — kind to skin, rinses off completely in one shower
  • Dramatically more slippery than any oil — this is what makes the glide feel weightless

Beware of venues using cheap lubricant and calling it nuru. The real gel is unmistakable — the first glide feels like nothing else you have experienced.

What the session is like

After a warm shower, you lie on a comfortable waterproof surface in a heated room. Your masseuse warms the gel, applies it generously to both of you, and begins with gentle strokes before introducing the signature full-body glides — chest to back, body to body, slow and rhythmic.

Most first-timers say the same two things afterwards: “I had no idea time passed that fast” and “why did I wait so long to try this?”

Practical questions, answered

Is it hygienic? At a professional parlour, absolutely: fresh linen, showers before and after, gel prepared per session.

Do I need to prepare? No. Arrive a few minutes early and shower on-site. Everything else is provided.

How long should I book? Nuru needs a minimum of 30 minutes to make sense; 45–60 minutes is the sweet spot. In London, authentic sessions run £110–£160 at Enigma Touch.

Can I choose my masseuse? Yes — Nancy is our most celebrated nuru specialist, though every masseuse on our team is trained in the technique.

Ready to try it?

Book a 45-minute session on WhatsApp, name your masseuse, and come with an open mind. Nuru is not an upgrade to massage as you know it — it is a different category of experience entirely.
